Resistance exercise, when performed to high-intensity, prolonged duration, has been shown to increase both muscle mass and strength, in part through the induction of anabolic hormones such as growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) 3 . Recent observations with resistance training show promise for stimulating muscle mass, which can be achieved by increasing rates of MPS and protein synthesis 2 – 4 . However, it has been shown that a number of factors contribute to muscle mass 4 , including the rate of catabolism and the rate of skeletal muscle breakdown 2 . Therefore, understanding how a particular nutrient, protein, modulates skeletal muscle protein synthesis and breakdown may be important for understanding training adaptations and for the development or repair of muscle structures 5 . Most studies have shown that a well-rounded protein meal is necessary to provide a sufficient amount of MPS and protein synthesis 5 , 6 , 7 . There are currently no data demonstrating that protein in combination with protein alone or an amino acid loading phase provides better effects on muscle mass 7 . Therefore, the purpose of this review is to examine how resistance training may enhance MPS and protein synthesis through the induction of anabolic hormones and the activation of MPS. MPS, an adaptive response of cells to overload or to damage, is a cellular response that leads to a decrease in mitochondrial function and protein breakdown, but more importantly increases cellular uptake and production of the growth hormone, IGF-1 (IGF-1) ( ). This increase in growth hormone can be thought of as the muscle building pathway, since both the increase in MPS and IGF-1 have been found to decrease body fat, muscle mass and strength, without increasing lean body mass 9 , 10 .
